Xpeng has officially commissioned its humanoid robot production lines, and the world's first advanced general-purpose humanoid robot — IRON — autonomously walked off the line after completing production. The achievement marks a critical leap from R&D prototyping to production-lines manufacturing.

The production lines feature core process automation exceeding 80%, setting a new manufacturing benchmark with a precision, flexible, and intelligent production line. Xpeng has extended its automotive-grade manufacturing capabilities to robotics, applying the quality control systems built up in electric vehicle manufacturing to robot production.

IRON specifications

IRON has 76 degrees of freedom across its body, with 21 in each hand. It carries three Turing AI chips developed in-house by Xpeng, delivering computing performance of up to 2,250 TOPS — 2,250 trillion operations per second. The robot is built to automotive-grade quality standards, establishing a quality system for mass production of advanced humanoid robots.

Production timeline and market plans

Xpeng plans to begin mass production of IRON late this year and deploy the robots first at its own stores and business sites, before starting formal sales in China and overseas markets next year. Official market launch and delivery in China and overseas markets are planned for 2027.

The company expects the gross profit margin per unit on general-purpose humanoid robots to be far higher than that of new energy vehicles, given the high technological barriers to entry and limited high-quality supply in the advanced general-purpose humanoid robot segment.

Funding and valuation

Xpeng's robotics business raised more than $900 million last month from investors including IDG Capital, GL Ventures, Tencent, and Alibaba. The business was valued at more than $6.3 billion after the investment. He Xiaopeng, Xpeng's founder, said the company had built a production line from scratch for an entirely new product category with no precedent, and that it would continue to expand production speed and scale.

Why it matters

This is the first time a company has activated dedicated automated production lines for advanced humanoid robots at scale. The automotive-grade approach — with over 80% process automation — suggests that the manufacturing bottleneck for humanoids may be loosening faster than many expected. If Xpeng can deliver IRON at scale by 2027, it pressures every other humanoid manufacturer to show their own production timeline.
