OpenTofu Joins CNCF, Karmada Graduates, and AWS Reaches Azure

September 2026 brought three significant cloud-native infrastructure milestones: OpenTofu entered the CNCF Sandbox, Karmada graduated to the highest CNCF maturity level, and AWS Interconnect reached Azure in public preview — closing the multicloud connectivity gap.

The cloud-native infrastructure landscape saw three major developments in September 2026 that signal a maturing ecosystem and growing demand for open, interoperable tooling.

OpenTofu, the community-driven open-source fork of Terraform, was accepted into the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) as a Sandbox-level project. OpenTofu maintains backward compatibility with Terraform while offering enhanced features and stability. The fork emerged after HashiCorp's license change in August 2023, and its acceptance into CNCF signals growing institutional confidence in the project's governance and sustainability. OpenTofu enables users to safely and predictably provision and manage cloud and on-prem infrastructure through infrastructure-as-code.

In a separate CNCF milestone, Karmada — the open, multi-cloud, multi-cluster Kubernetes orchestration platform — moved to the Graduated maturity level on September 3, 2026. Karmada had been in Incubating status since December 2023 and now counts over 1,200 contributors, a 14% increase year-over-year. The platform is already used in production by XiaoHongShu (Red Note), which handles over 300 million monthly active users and used Karmada to manage TikTok refugee surges earlier in 2026. Graduation means Karmada is now considered production-ready, well-maintained, and broadly adopted within the CNCF ecosystem.

On the multicloud connectivity front, AWS Interconnect reached Microsoft Azure in public preview, completing the connective fabric across Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. AWS Interconnect now supports private, high-speed connectivity to Azure, allowing enterprises to build workloads that span both clouds without traversing the public internet. This closes a significant gap in the multicloud networking landscape and gives architects more options for designing latency-sensitive, cross-cloud applications.

Together, these three developments reflect where cloud infrastructure is heading: open-source alternatives to proprietary tooling (OpenTofu), mature multi-cluster orchestration (Karmada), and interconnected cloud platforms that let workloads span providers seamlessly (AWS-Azure interconnect). For IT teams, the practical implication is that the monocloud era is giving way to a more heterogeneous, portable, and interoperable infrastructure landscape — one where vendor lock-in is increasingly a design choice rather than a forced constraint.
