Nokia has introduced a new edge and AI platform for rugged field operations, targeting mining first with public safety and defense versions expected later. The platform, called Cognitive Operations, runs on-premises or in the cloud and works with a rugged edge router named Cognitive Edge Node — aimed at sites where downtime can endanger workers and operations.

The system supports AI assistance, 3D digital twins, video analytics, and predictive maintenance. These tools can help teams spot faults earlier and improve safety by giving operators better site visibility. Lelio Di Martino, general manager of CO at Nokia, called the launch a "defining step in Nokia's promise to deliver connected intelligence."

The launch comes as Nokia recently stepped back from parts of the campus private 5G market and is preparing to sell its enterprise campus edge business. Industry analysts see the move as a redefinition of campus 5G around AI rather than an exit — the convergence of AI, edge computing, and mission-critical communications is becoming a key requirement for industrial environments.
